How to play Neon Serpent

Neon Serpent is a survival score attack built around clean turns and fast route decisions. Guide the head across a glowing grid, collect the active pickup, and avoid walls and your own expanding trail. Each pickup lengthens the serpent and raises the pace, so open space gradually becomes a resource. A route that feels generous in the first minute can become a trap once the body occupies several rows.

The scoring twist is a short chain window. Collecting another pickup quickly keeps the chain alive, and reaching a chain of three applies a multiplier. Chasing that bonus creates tension between the safest long route and the fastest direct route. The pickup position is visible, but the body layout changes after every turn, so maintaining an escape corridor matters more than memorizing a pattern.

Two arena sizes change the character of a run. The larger field gives beginners room to practice broad loops and controlled approaches. The compact field forces earlier interaction with the growing body and makes chain attempts much riskier. Press Tab before a run to switch arenas, then use the instant restart flow to improve a route. Keyboard control is complete; touch and gamepad support are still pending and are called out here so players are not asked to discover that after loading the game.

Rules and objective

  1. Collect the glowing pickup to score, grow by one segment, and place the next target.
  2. Crossing the arena boundary or touching any part of the serpent ends the run.
  3. A direct reversal into the segment behind the head is ignored, preventing accidental instant self-collisions.
  4. The run continues until a collision; restart from the result screen and try to beat the saved high score.

Scoring and progression

Pickup
A normal pickup awards a base 10 points.
Chain window
Reach the next pickup within 1.6 seconds to continue the active chain.
Multiplier
A chain of three or more increases the value of rapid consecutive pickups.
Speed
Movement accelerates as the serpent grows, increasing the execution difficulty of later points.
Best score
The highest result is stored locally in the browser when storage is available.

Modes and features

Standard arena
More room for route planning, chain practice, and longer survival runs.
Compact arena
A tighter grid that brings self-collision pressure into the run much sooner.
Chain scoring
Fast collections build a multiplier without making cautious play invalid.
Speed ramp
The control rhythm intensifies alongside body length instead of staying flat.

Tips for a better run

  • Use broad parallel lanes in the large arena instead of coiling tightly around the first few pickups.
  • Treat a chain as optional when the shortest route would close your only exit corridor.
  • Turn one cell earlier than feels necessary at high speed; late corrections are the most common cause of wall collisions.
  • In the compact arena, keep the body near an outer edge until you can see a safe path back through the center.

From the workbench

Gigabite's version focuses on the conflict between route safety and a deliberately short scoring window. The two arena sizes let one rule set support both an approachable survival game and a demanding score sprint. Responsive canvas work is complete, but the final original visual identity, touch controls, and physical-device checks remain explicit launch blockers.
